Queensland has much to look forward to with exciting times ahead for social housing in our state.
The rollout of more than 4000 new social housing dwellings through a combination of State and Commonwealth funding is underway as well as a large-scale maintenance and repair program. Not only does this mean more roofs over the heads of Queenslanders in housing need, it also means jobs for our construction industry and local tradespeople.
We are working with our federal counterparts to deliver national partnership agreements for social housing, remote Indigenous housing and homelessness.
We are also assisting thousands of Queensland households in the private housing market with programs such as the National Rental Affordability Scheme, Home Assist Secure and RentConnect.
To date, Housing and Homelessness Services owns or funds more than 67,000 social housing dwellings, an increase of more than 700 since June 2009.
With all of this national and statewide work going on to improve the lives of Queenslanders, it is timely to look closer to home at what we can do to help create safer, healthier and more vibrant suburbs and towns.
I was proud to support the department's Tenant Participation program and its promotion of Neighbour Day on Sunday 28 March. The national day is designed to celebrate and remind residents what living in a community should be all about.
It was great to hear that social housing tenant groups held their own celebrations around the state to develop better and ongoing relationships with their fellow neighbours.
I look forward to meeting with social housing tenants across Queensland when I officially open some of the wonderful new dwellings this year.
