Indigenous Women in Hard Hats is a pilot training program designed to make the path to employment easier for women in non-traditional industries such as construction, engineering and technology.
The program aims to attract Indigenous women from the Townville and Ayr regions into apprenticeships and traineeships, providing them with opportunities for career development and employment.
Six Indigenous women have been selected to participate in the program, which works closely with the Department of Public Works - QBuild, as the host employer, and TAFE.
Those undertaking the program have the opportunity to learn valuable skills and on-the-job experience, along with earning a real wage.
On completion, participants will receive a nationally recognised qualification in their chosen area and would have very likely established the contacts necessary to go straight into their new career.
Indigenous Women in Hard Hats builds on the success of the Women in Hard Hats program launched in 2006 and administered by the Office for Women. It is a step towards addressing regional and rural skills shortages, particularly in construction, and works towards making workplaces culturally and gender diverse.
