Garden Awards sprout a variety of prizes

Minister for Housing Karen Struthers launched the Department of Communities' 2011 Garden Awards in Ipswich on 18 May 2011. The annual Awards are a key feature of the departments Tenant Participation Program.

The department has especially encouraged tenants who have been involved in rebuilding gardens that were affected by the recent natural disasters.

The Garden Awards are open to all departmental tenants, and tenants of community and local government-managed housing throughout Queensland.

"You don't have to be an experienced gardener," Mary Slivka, Acting Manager of the Tenant Participation Program said.

"It doesn't matter what size garden you have or whether it's a house, courtyard or balcony garden. It doesn't have to be the biggest or the most expensive to win an award."

The Garden Awards has eight award categories, including best courtyard/small space garden, children’s garden and edible garden.

A brochure and entry form have been mailed to all tenants. Judging will take place during September with awards and prizes presented during October.
