New system to reduce time spent homeless

In September 2011, the Department of Communities’ Homelessness Information Management Program will launch phase one of its new Homelessness Vacancy Capacity Management System to be used by 40 specialist homelessness services in Queensland’s South West, South East and Brisbane regions.

One of Queensland’s key commitments under the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness, the new web-based interface computer system will record real-time information on both accommodation (vacancy) and non-accommodation (capacity) availability of specialist homelessness services.

"Up-to-date information will be easily accessible through the new Vacancy Capacity Management System,” Desrae Cameron, Manager, Homelessness Information Management Program, Homelessness Programs said.

"This new system will be used by the department’s funded specialist homelessness services, the department’s Homelessness Programs area and regional Community Capacity and Service Quality staff.

"It will mean that people experiencing homelessness can access services and move through the homelessness service system more quickly."

Specialist homelessness services are being supported in the implementation of the new system through an end-user training program and service coordination protocols.

It is anticipated that phase two deployment - state wide coverage - of the Vacancy Capacity Management System will occur from February 2012.
