Timely management of vacant properties is critical for people in housing need and minimises costs incurred by providers through lost rent. Providers and Housing Service Centre staff in some parts of the State have advised Social Housing Programs branch of concerns regarding vacancy turnaround times.
Social Housing Programs is aware that there are a number of factors contributing to delays in filling some vacancies and is developing a comprehensive plan to address these issues. Providers and Housing Service Centre staff will be kept informed of any proposals to assist in ensuring timely vacancy management.
In the interim, to ensure timely and appropriate allocations are made and to help keep the housing register up to date, providers are requested to ensure that staff responsible for filling vacancies are aware of the correct procedures.
Comprehensive information on referral and allocation procedures for community housing providers is available on the Information for Community Housing Providers webpage of the department’s website.
