Thank you to all the providers, peaks, tenant groups, and advocacy and support groups who took time out of their busy schedules to attend the consultation forums for the National Regulatory System in December 2011. Over 150 people attended the forums and provided feedback on the key elements of the proposed system.
The Department of Communities has prepared state-based consultation reports summarising information gained from the three Queensland sessions, which are now available on the department’s website. Early this year, summary feedback from all jurisdictions will be presented to Housing Ministers in a final, national consultation report. Housing Ministers will then make a decision about implementing the National Regulatory System.
The public consultation process has been an opportunity to raise issues with the proposed framework, as well as important implementation issues, such as what can be done to prepare for transition from state-based to national registration.
Please familiarise yourselves with the information on the national website. In particular, I would like to draw your attention to the Queensland-specific ‘frequently asked questions’ sheet, which can be accessed from the home page through the State and Territories tab (under Key Information). You will also find further Queensland-specific commentary in the cost-benefit analysis, including discussion on the characteristics, size and shape of this state’s community housing sector.
This is a very significant reform, so I encourage you to continue to discuss the proposed system within your organisations and regional networks and with peak and industry bodies that have an interest in the future delivery of social housing.
Thank you again to all who have participated in the development of this important initiative.
