The Department of Communities (Housing and Homelessness Services) Indigenous Housing and Homelessness Programs aims to remove homelessness and overcrowding in remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through provision of social housing programs to 16 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander councils, encompassing 34 discrete Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This support includes construction of new houses, an annual upgrade program and provision of planned and responsive maintenance to improve housing for these tenants in communities.

Legislative reforms introduced in 2008 enable eligible people to become home owners on Deed of Grant in Trust land by acquiring a private residential lease.

Indigenous Women in Hard Hats is a program led by Indigenous Housing and Homelessness Programs, Department of Communities to encourage Indigenous women to consider careers in non-traditional 'hard-hat' industries such as building and construction.
The discussion paper describes the actions the Queensland Government is taking to enable home ownership on Indigenous communal lands. These communal lands include Aboriginal Deed of Grant in Trust lands, Torres Strait Islander Deed of Grant in Trust Lands, and the Mornington and Aurukun Shire lease lands. The paper also gives readers the opportunity to influence future Queensland Government decisions to better enable home ownership.
