Indigenous Women in Hard Hats is a program led by Indigenous Housing and Homelessness Programs, Department of Communities to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to consider careers in non-traditional 'hard-hat' industries such as building and construction.
The Indigenous Women in Hard Hats program is an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to continue to play a role in the success of their community.
These tradeswomen will have the opportunity to learn new skills, gain a nationally accredited qualification and to play a role in closing the skills gap in Queensland.
On 15 July 2010, Member for Townsville, Ms Mandy Johnstone MP announced successful participants from the Townsville region. Tradeswomen will develop workforce skills in the building and construction industry through their employment with QBuild.
QBuild is one of the Queensland Government's largest employers and is a leading provider of construction and maintenance services in Queensland and offers both full time and school-based training and employment opportunities.
Indigenous Women in Hard Hats tradeswomen are currently completing:
- Painting apprenticeships;
- Carpentry apprenticeships; and
- Construction Worker Traineeships.
Indigenous Women in Hard Hats tradeswomen commenced their employment and training with QBuild in August 2010.
Note: Indigenous Women in Hard Hats builds on the already established Women in Hard Hats program led by the Office for Women. For further information on the Office for Women program please visit the website.
