Reasons:
- a direct inside/outside connection is a central requirement of livability in most Queensland climates. In good weather, it significantly expands the living space easily available
- it ensures a reasonable aspect from the living areas to other areas under the control of the resident
- it can facilitate cross-ventilation
- it increases the sense of space in tightly planned housing.
