Inside/outside connection

There should be both a direct visual and a direct physical access relationship between the dwelling’s living/dining area and the private external space (the back yard or balcony).

Reasons:

  • a direct inside/outside connection is a central requirement of livability in most Queensland climates. In good weather, it significantly expands the living space easily available
  • it ensures a reasonable aspect from the living areas to other areas under the control of the resident
  • it can facilitate cross-ventilation
  • it increases the sense of space in tightly planned housing.
