The use of trees, ground covers and other plants should be an integral and thoughtful part of the overall design, not an afterthought.

Trees and plants:

  • contribute to the microclimate of the site and the locality
  • improve the appearance of front gardens
  • provide definition and amenity to private spaces
  • shade or soften group car parking areas, and
  • aid legibility within group schemes.

Wherever practical, significant existing trees on the site should be retained and protected.

Arguments for careful planting include:

  • it is a major source of resident amenity
  • it promotes community acceptance of the new development
  • it provides a habitat for wildlife
  • it provides opportunity for recreation for housebound residents.
