Renting in the private market

Private rental fact sheet series

Fact sheets are available for people wanting to find a home to rent in the private market. They offer practical information on a range of issues relating to renting, including how to find a suitable rental property, make a rental application and maintain a tenancy.

RentConnect

Through RentConnect, the department helps people to find and secure a tenancy in the private rental market.

National Rental Affordability Scheme

The National Rental Affordability Scheme, an Australian Government initiative financially supported by the Queensland Government, aims to add up to 50,000 new and affordable rental dwellings across Australia by 2012, and a further 50,000 after July 2012, subject to demand. In Queensland, the Department of Communities is responsible for assessing and referring eligible tenants to the tenancy managers of each of the scheme's properties. Information is available on how to rent under the scheme.

Assistance with bonds and rents

Renters in the private market can access assistance from the department with Bond Loans and Rental Grants. If you receive a Bond Loan or Rental Grant from the department, remember to advise the department if you move. You should provide the department and your lessor/agent with your forwarding address.

What should I do if I am having problems with my lessor/agent?

The department does not enter into disputes between lessors/agents and tenants. If you require assistance, contact the Residential Tenancies Authority or your local Tenant Advice and Advocacy Service Queensland (PDF, 15 KB) (RTF, 128 KB).
