Here are some things you can do to be a good neighbour and promote harmony in your community.

Keep the noise down

Don't play music loudly at an unreasonable time of the day or night. Think about the people who live around you, particularly if you live in a block of units.

Be responsible for your children and visitors

Children have a right to play, but make sure your children and visitors do not trespass onto other people's property or make too much noise at an unreasonable time.

Respect other people's privacy

By all means be friendly to your neighbours, but most people like their privacy too. Take their cue as to how much involvement they want with their neighbours.

Settling disputes

Tenants are entitled to live in a safe, healthy and peaceful environment. Neighbourhood disputes can sometimes become a source of aggravation and tension. Any problems between neighbours should be settled before they become serious.

Dispute Resolution Centres provide free voluntary and confidential mediation services, using trained mediators if you need help in this area. Mediation can help neighbours resolve disputes including those involving pets, privacy, noise and family conflicts.

The department can help by referring you to the appropriate agencies, which may be able to help you resolve neighbourhood problems.

Keep your neighbourhood looking nice

Help keep your neighbourhood looking good by putting rubbish in bins provided, and keeping your outdoor area tidy.
