With the establishment of one social housing system in Queensland, many changes have been and continue to be made to the way housing assistance is provided. These changes are made to ensure our limited stock of social housing properties are rented by the people who need them the most.
The department is also continuing to look at new and better ways of assisting clients through enhancing its services together with local communities.
The story on page two of this newsletter gives two excellent examples of how, through the Community Renewal program and thanks to the community's interest and participation, we are able to make a real difference in Queensland communities. Established in 1998, the Community Renewal program brings communities and governments together to find new solutions to local needs.
A list of the areas that Community Renewal operates in is included on this page. If you live in or near these areas, I encourage you to get involved in local activities and consultation meetings to help improve your situation or community.
Since 1990, a number of improvements have also been made to social housing thanks to tenants' input in developing policies, housing design and maintenance services.
If you are a fairly new tenant or a tenant who has never had the opportunity to participate, please ask your nearest departmental office for information about how to join your local tenant group or how to set up your own group.
We would appreciate your involvement and look forward to continuing to work with you to improve Queensland's social housing.
