A record number of entries were received in 2009 from proud gardeners.

The awards provide tenants with an opportunity to showcase their gardens while providing recognition of the important role tenants play in creating a water-wise community.

Volunteers in tenant groups worked collaboratively with the department's Housing Services office staff to promote and manage the awards.

Garden Awards presentations were held throughout Queensland. Community Services and Housing Minister Karen Struthers attended the presentation in Logan, which received 52 entries.

“I congratulate all the tenants for taking part in the awards. It's a great initiative that's also all about encouraging healthy lifestyles,” she said.

Along with the winning entrants, a number of highly commended and special awards were presented. Entrants received a certificate, a photo of their garden and a plant or voucher for garden products.

The awards also provide an opportunity for tenants to share their gardening enthusiasm and tips. In Ipswich, two young children received gardening advice from their elderly neighbour and won the Children's Garden category.
