The Shirley Hughson Tenant Group has come a long way since members first met under the shade of a mango tree 16 years ago.
Today, the group manages the community room located within their housing complex on the Gold Coast, and organises a busy calendar of activities for tenants. The group produces and distributes a quarterly newsletter and has served more than 300 meals at social gatherings and tenant meetings held over the past 12 months.
The group aims to prevent the social isolation some tenants may experience by creating opportunities for friendship and involvement in activities. They also represent the needs and interests of tenants to their local Housing Services office and other agencies.
Fundraising activities and funding received through the department's Tenant Participation Grant cover the day-to-day running costs.
Treasurer and social coordinator Brenda Boatswain is proud of what the Shirley Hughson Tenant Group has achieved.
“New ideas, hard work, overcoming brick walls and headaches have resulted in a friendly, well-informed group of seniors who are dedicated to looking after the tenants they represent, while having fun,” Brenda said.
Sponsored by the Gold Coast Regional Tenant Association Incorporated and supported by the local Member of Parliament and the Gold Coast City Council, the group recently purchased a much needed barbecue, computer, printer and camera with funding from the Gambling Community Benefit Grant.
