Silver Cord volunteers ensure that clients are safe and well by phoning them regularly

St John Ambulance is a worldwide, voluntary, self-funded charitable organisation, dedicated to helping people in times of sickness, distress, suffering or danger. The caring callers of the St John Ambulance Silver Cord Program help a wide range of vulnerable people in the community, through a simple phone call.

The Silver Cord Program services frail, aged or younger people with a disability and their carers, who are confined to home or are socially isolated from family and friends.

Silver Cord volunteers ensure that clients are well and safe by phoning them every day, or less frequently, for a friendly and caring chat. These telephone calls not only save lives, they greatly enhance quality of life, assisting clients to stay in their own homes. The program often delays the need for these people to move into residential care.

The Silver Cord Program needs more volunteers throughout Queensland to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for the program. The work of the Silver Cord volunteers does not take a great deal of time but is incredibly rewarding. Often callers will gain just as much pleasure from the calls as the clients.

St John volunteers are ordinary people who are dedicated to serving the community without thought for reward or monetary gain. Around 300 Silver Cord callers volunteered over 25,000 hours of their time to the community last year.
