More information for people starting or returning to work

In the July 2006 tenant newsletter, the department provided important information for tenants on Centrelink or Department of Veterans' Affairs payments.

These tenants and household members who start or return to work will not have their rent increased as a result of the additional income for at least six months. This is to encourage clients on a Centrelink or Department of Veterans' Affairs income to enter the workforce and to minimise the associated costs of starting work.

A six-month guaranteed rent period is a benefit and not an entitlement and therefore household members must apply for this period.

As with other changes in household membership and income, a household member on a Centrelink or Veterans' Affairs income who is starting work must apply for this benefit within 28 days of starting work. If the advice is not received within 28 days, the department will not consider your application for the six-month guaranteed rent period.
