Affordable housing strategies

The Department of Housing is developing a range of initiatives aimed at supporting the supply of affordable housing by the private and not-for-profit sectors.

Departmental initiatives focus on elements of the broader housing system that enhance opportunities for the private sector and not-for-profit sector to engage in the supply of affordable housing, and assist them to make use of these opportunities.

Initiatives already introduced include a resource kit that acknowledges the important role local governments play in improving opportunities for these sectors and in supporting the supply of affordable housing.

The department has also worked with the Department of Local Government, Planning, Sport and Recreation to prepare a State Planning Policy and supporting Guideline (PDF, 1.4 MB) for Housing and Residential Development, which encourages the supply of a range of housing forms to meet the diverse housing need in Queensland communities. The State Planning Policy took effect on 29 January 2007.

Other tools and services available include guidelines on the design, development, delivery and management of affordable housing.

The department also monitors and responds to the closure of private residential services and caravan parks that assist in the supply of affordable housing.
