Social housing in Queensland is benefiting from an investment of around $1.165 billion of federal funding under the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan – Social Housing Initiative. The funding is supporting thousands of jobs across Queensland and providing more homes for those who need them through the delivery of 4,000 new homes by June 2012.
Demand for social housing and more affordable housing options for seniors, people with a disability, young families and other community members who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless has continued to grow. There is also an even greater demand for secure employment. The Social Housing Initiative is providing the funding to meet some of this need.
The timeframes stipulated by the Australian Government are tight, but they need to be to provide jobs and housing now. To meet this timeframe, the Department of Communities, through the Department of Public Works, will deliver dwellings through a combination of capital works and turnkey arrangements and providing capital grants to not-for-profit organisations.
Through a tender process, the Department of Public Works carefully selected sites for projects that provide access to transport, work opportunities, schools and other services.
The strategy of both the Queensland and Australian Governments is for social housing to be dispersed across communities and blend in with its surroundings. New dwellings, which incorporate increased levels of energy efficiency through contemporary design, are set for delivery in all major regional centres.
This funding will deliver high-quality housing that meets the needs of tenants and the local community.
