The Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan – Social Housing Initiative is the largest social housing infrastructure project undertaken in Queensland in decades, set to deliver 4,000 homes across the state by June 2012.
Under the Plan, the Australian Government has invested around $1.2 billion in Queensland, which has already gone a long way to boost the supply of social housing and support jobs for construction workers and associated suppliers, contractors and apprentices.
Over the life of the initiative, social housing projects are expected to generate almost 2,000 direct and indirect jobs each year. Delivered in two stages, this is a great opportunity to reshape the social housing property portfolio and to secure jobs and investment in Queensland.
The Queensland Government has a policy of supporting local industry through the Local Industry Policy, 'A Fair Go For Local Industry' . Projects being delivered under the Australian Government's Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan are committed to supporting competitive local industry and to ensure that local industry is provided with full, fair, and reasonable opportunities to tender for work on infrastructure and resource-based projects and major procurements in Queensland. This applies to government projects delivered by both the private and public sectors.
Successful contractors delivering the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan are required, under the Queensland Government's Local Industry Policy , to engage in a Local Industry Participation Plan.
All contractors, consultants and suppliers (excluding sub contractors working directly for head contractors) wishing to participate in the delivery of the Plan in Queensland also have to be prequalified or registered with the Department of Public Works.
