Fay Jorgensen

Location:
Toowoomba

For 60 years Fay Jorgensen has given her time, creativity and leadership to supporting community services in Toowoomba. Throughout that time she has worked tirelessly for St Luke’s Anglican Church with the parish council. She spent years fundraising to build the Groom Park Community Hall and more years maintaining and letting the hall that remains a hub of community activity today.

Her love of the arts placed Fay at the centre of cultural life in Toowoomba. She is a life member and honorary vice president of the Toowoomba Philharmonic Society. Fay was part of a committee that had the foresight in 1975 to purchase the property 'Laguna' as the society’s home. She has helped stage numerous musical events here as well as the successful catering business run from Laguna. When the society marked its 100-year anniversary, Fay was again on hand to organise the celebrations.

Fay has been instrumental in organising many cultural events in Toowoomba. Her expertise and innovative ideas led to the successful 7 Choir Festival that ran for 20 years and featured 10 local choirs performing at St Luke's Church, and as a long-standing committee member of the Toowoomba Photographic Society she staged the International Photographic Competition for the Australian Photographic Society.

Fay’s energy and commitment extends to her work with senior citizens, the elderly and people with a disability. She is a life member of the Toowoomba Senior Citizens Club and dedicated years of work to raising funds to build the present club rooms. As Secretary and Treasurer of the Toowoomba Respite Centre Management Committee, Fay played an integral role in project managing the building of a day respite centre that opened in 1987. The centre caters for 22 guests and is open six days a week. Fay and another volunteer oversee the day-to-day running of the centre.

Fay continues to be an inspirational Queenslander, successfully balancing her extended family responsibilities and her significant volunteering commitments. In her humble and generous way, Fay has made a difference to the lives of thousands of people in her community.
