It would be true to say that Mary Orr’s life is volunteering. Every day she dedicates her time and special brand of empathy to bring joy to those in her community. And it’s not just one community organisation that benefits. Mary has worked as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for the past 20 years, the local St Vincent de Paul opportunity shop for 17 years, ACRO Family Support Centre for 19 years and Carindale Court Nursing Home for 16 years.
When you consider Mary is 76 years old and does not own a car, her level of commitment to volunteering is remarkable. Whether she is helping with meals, explaining the workings of a prison to families or assisting physiotherapists with exercise classes, everyone agrees, ‘It’s just not the same without Mary’.
Her initiative and drive support the staff of community organisations that rely on volunteers to help them provide vital services to the community. Without people like Mary these organisations could not be as effective.
Mary’s volunteering commitments also include 18 years escorting Salvin Park Aged Care residents to and from concerts, 10 years enriching the lives of the residents at the Blue Care Day Respite Centre and three years serving cups of tea at the Blood Bank.
There are so many people and community groups that wish to honour Mary and this award is one small way of doing that. For Mary, the honour is the work.
