Reg Flanagan

Location:
Salisbury

Ever since Reg Flanagan was a young boy he has been passionate about sport. So it is not surprising that he has spent most of his life encouraging deaf people to play sport and take part in events such as the Australian Deaf Games and Deaflympics.

For more than 40 years Reg has worked tirelessly to improve deaf people’s access to sport. This dedication was recognised in 2001 when he was named Volunteer of the Year by Deaf Sports and Recreation Queensland and again in 2005 when he was chosen by the Queensland deaf community to be a torch bearer for the Deaflympics in Melbourne.

Reg is a founding member of Queensland Deaf Rugby League and the Queensland Deaf Basketball Club and has been involved in various leadership positions for Queensland Deaf Lawn Bowls since 1977. He has been the president of Australian Deaf Lawn Bowls since 2003 and has represented Queensland at the National Deaf Lawn Bowls competition since 1987.

Reg is an outstanding role model who inspires young deaf sportspeople to get involved in their community. Whether he is distributing information, organising accommodation for teams, being an active committee member or teaching deaf people how to play lawn bowls, his leadership and knowledge are invaluable to the sporting groups he serves.

Although his passion is sport, Reg still finds time to volunteer at Queensland Deaf Senior Citizens and Queensland Deaf News. His energy, motivation and positive attitude are a measure of his community spirit.
