Sadie Gannon

Location:
Charleville

Growing up on the land, Sadie Gannon developed a resilience and determination that is evident today in the way she goes about helping others in her community. Since the 1950s, Sadie has devoted her time to supporting those in need and at 84 years of age shows no sign of slowing down.

Sadie’s community work began with the Queensland Country Women’s Association in western Queensland and she is currently a member of nine voluntary committees in Charleville, including Meals on Wheels, the Anglican Ladies Guild, the Red Cross, Healthy Ageing and the South-West District Retirement Village.

For the past 13 years Sadie has been the President of the Charleville Hospital Auxiliary, raising funds for vital equipment for the hospital and nursing home. Sadie and her volunteers organise the annual spring fete, ball and other fundraising activities. The auxiliary was also instrumental in purchasing a community bus to transport people with a disability and the elderly.

Sadie is a quiet achiever who goes about her daily business without fuss or need for recognition. Both young and old are in awe of her stamina as she organises activities and applies her practical wisdom to the task at hand.

Sadie’s dedication to her community extends to her work with the Charleville and District Community Support Association, which manages government-funded human service programs providing support and housing for young people, families, seniors and people with a disability. She also provides catering for the local Endurance Riders Association for rides and fundraising events.

Sadie’s willingness to work for her community is an inspiration and her contribution to community life in the state’s south west immeasurable.
