What is the Get Active Queensland Accreditation Program (GAQAP)

GAQAP provides teachers, school sport volunteers, tertiary and senior secondary school students throughout Queensland with FREE training that can ultimately lead to recognised accreditation in coaching, officiating and sports first aid.

The program, formerly known as the Teacher-Coach Accreditation Program, has attracted more than 15000 participants since its inception in 2002. The program is a key component of the Queensland Government's commitment to getting more Queenslanders involved in sport and active recreation.

The program aims to:

  • Increase the number of teachers and school staff with recognised sport and recreation accreditation
  • Enhance the opportunities for curriculum / extra-curricular sports activities to be offered to school students.

Course details

About the Program

At each GAQAP, a selected variety of different sports coaching, officiating, first aid and general sports courses are available. Not all courses are conducted at each GAQAP. State Sporting Organisations conduct the training for all the courses at the GAQAP. Each course runs for the duration of one day, allowing participants to complete one course at each program.

Content

Coaching Accreditations contain two components to them 1) Theory (Beginning Coaching General Principles) and 2) Sport Specific Practical. Coaching courses conducted at GAQAP address the sport-specific practical components of the various sports e.g. rules, skills, drills, techniques, and strategies. The theoretical component of Coaching General Principles is not covered in this program. The Beginning Coaching General Principles Certificate is a requirement to gain accreditation in most coaching activities. For more information, view the pre-requisites section of this website.

Officiating courses will address the rules, regulations, field/court dimensions, and specifications of the sport, giving the participant the theoretical knowledge to officiate their chosen sport. To gain the full Officiating Badge, participants will often need to be practically assessed by the State Sporting Organisation after this program.

The Sports First Aid course addresses general first aid on the sporting field. Level 1 Sports Trainer aims to give the participant an advanced level of first aid knowledge in the sports arena and follows the Sports First Aid Course. Sports Strapping addresses strapping techniques for different parts of the body.

Duration

Courses take between 4 and 8 hrs contact time to complete, depending on which course you register.

Assessment

Assessment requirements depend on the course you complete. Some courses complete all assessment requirements during the course; others require some post-course practical and/or theoretical assessment.

Prerequisites

Officiating and Sports First Aid Courses have no prerequisites.

Level 1 Sports Trainer Courses have a prerequisite of a current sports first aid or senior first aid certificate with a valid CPR component.

Most coaching courses have a prerequisite of the Beginning Coaching General Principles that needs to be attained before the complete accreditation can be awarded. Registered teachers and current accredited Level 1, 2 or 3 coaches receive full Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) for the Beginning Coaching General Principles. Student Teachers, Teacher Aides, Volunteers, Community members, Tertiary and Senior Secondary School Students need to attain this certificate to receive the coaching accreditation. This does not apply to officiating, physical activity for people with a disability, or first aid courses.

Participants who require the Beginning Coaching General Principles to attain their course's coaching accreditation, where the sport allows, will need to provide evidence of completion of the Beginning Coaching General Principles attainment to the course presenter in order for a certificate to be issued.

Beginning Coaching General Principles can be gained in one of three ways:

  1. by attending a FREE Beginning Coaching General Principles Course conducted by the Department of Communities (Sport and Recreation Services) in your region. These courses are usually held in conjunction with the GAQAP
  2. by completing a Beginning Coaching General Principles course at a TAFE, university or other recognised provider
  3. by completing a Beginning Coaching General Principles course via the Australian Sports Commission's online course.

Cost

Attendance to The Get Active Queensland Accreditation Program is FREE. Some courses require the participant to pay a post-course accreditation fee to the State Sporting Organisation to cover registration as a coach with the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) and other mandatory requirements for coaches in their organistion (eg. Insurance, membership etc). Please check the Information on the Courses section of this site to see if your course requires an accreditation fee.

Accreditation

On completion of most courses, participants will be awarded a Level 1 Coaching or Officiating Accreditation or equivalent. However some courses offer an Orientation to Coaching or Teacher's Certificate due to the Level 1 Accreditation in that sport being too complex for this program.

If you are a Senior School Student and wish to participate in these workshops, you will need to have your parent/guardian complete a Senior Student Consent Form (PDF, 41 KB) and send it to The Department of Communities (Sport and Recreation Services).
