Get Active Queensland Schools Program

Athletes signing autographs The Get Active Queensland Schools Program is a Queensland Government initiative to motivate Queensland school students to get active by giving them new ideas about why, how and where to be physically active.

Since its launch in April 2002, more than 310,000 students from over 2700 school visits across Queensland have participated in the program.

The program offers Eat Well Be Active (EWBA) sessions, providing students with memorable contact with their sporting heroes. The EWBA sessions are designed to improve sporting skills, agility, hand-eye coordination and teamwork, while demonstrating the fun side of physical activity, and reinforcing the key messages of the benefits of keeping fit and healthy.

Athletes from the Queensland Academy of Sport work with students to develop necessary skills and positive attitudes to help them become, and stay, physically active throughout their life.

This initiative, delivered by the Queensland Government, reflects the commitment to improving sporting skills at a school based level.

Who can participate?

The Get Active Queensland Schools Program extends to all Queensland primary schools.

The program will visit more than 150 primary schools each year throughout the State.

What are the benefits for teachers and schools?

The Get Active Queensland Schools Program has been designed to help teachers in Queensland schools deliver the Health and Physical Education syllabus by developing concepts and skills for physical activity and by promoting health of individuals and communities.

How long will each visit last?

Each successful school will receive two visits from the Get Active Queensland Schools Program athletes. These will be divided into two different terms throughout the year. Final details of the format for visits will be negotiated with Department of Communities; Sport and Recreation Services.

What happens during a school visit?

Students participate in EWBA sessions conducted by Queensland Academy of Sport athletes. The sessions engage students in non-competitive physical activity including games and activities that focus on skill development such as throwing, jumping and running. Please note that the athletes do not conduct sport specific coaching.

The EWBA sessions also include the importance and benefits of physical activity; how to manage a healthy lifestyle; and how and where to be physically active, while motivating the students to be involved in physical activity.

How can my school participate?

Visits are conducted in three school sport regions per term. The program is targeting schools who haven't participated in the program since its inception. Your school will be notified when visits are being coordinated in your school sport region. The Department of Communities; Sport and Recreation Services will then confirm the timing and format of the visits with successful schools.
