Sport and active recreation plays an important role in Indigenous communities. It provides lots of health and social benefits and also helps combat the growing issue of obesity which affects all Australian communities.
Opportunities that are available
To assist Indigenous communities to participate and get active, the Department of Communities (Sport and Recreation Services) have put together brochures to help provide simple tips on getting active and healthy eating. Click on the links below to download the relevant brochure;
Accreditation
Individuals and groups can assist their local community by gaining accreditation with GAQAP through enrolment in one of the numerous sport, recreational or traditional games courses that is conducted across Queensland.
The Indigenous Community Sport and Recreation Officer Program
To increase community involvement and participation, the Department is working with the Queensland Police Citizen Youth Welfare Association to fund sport and recreation officer positions. The Indigenous Community Sport and Recreation Officer (ICSRO) program aims to provide resources in remote and regional communities to deliver sport and recreation initiatives.
ICSRO are developing sport and recreation programs in 38 communities throughout Queensland.
State Sporting Organisations
Further support and assistance could be provided by State Sporting Organisations who are responsible for administering and developing their sport or recreation activity in Queensland
