Coordinators:
- establish a small working group to share tasks, provide support and ensure the program's sustainability
- recruit and support volunteer walk organisers (who lead walking groups)
- recruit and refer interested walkers to join these groups.
This requires:
- staff time of about four to six hours a week for the first eight to ten weeks and then one to two hours a week after that
- local knowledge and access to networks
- collaboration with other local community groups and agencies.
Who can be a coordinator?
A variety of staff members of local governments have been involved as Heart Foundation Walking coordinators, including Sport and Recreation Officers, Community Development Officers, Environmental Health Officers and Health Planning Officers. In many cases, many of the roles and tasks of the coordinator can be delegated to other staff such as reception/administration staff, students or volunteers or to other members of the local working group.
The Heart Foundation provides coordinators with inservice training in the role of implementing Heart Foundation Walking and resources for establishing and promoting the program in your local community.
