Healthy Food and Drink Guidelines

Sport and recreation clubs and associations play a vital role in providing opportunities for Queenslanders of all ages to lead healthy active lifestyles.

Your club or association already does this through participation in sport and recreation. Why not combine that with the provision and promotion of healthier food and drink choices, and help build a culture that supports fun, safe and healthy active environments? Healthy eating is for everyone, even for those who are already a healthy weight and participate in regular physical activity.

Working out what is required to introduce healthier food and drink choices in your club or association is probably easier than you think. Whether you are a professional canteen supervisor with a fully staffed kitchen or an occasional volunteer with just a vending machine, you make even more of a difference by promoting healthier food and drink choices among your club community. Follow our step by step guide to change, including supporting tools and resources, by clicking on the links below. You may even find you sell more and ultimately increase sales!

  • The Guidelines

This section shows you how to provide healthy food and drinks to customers and therefore help encourage Queenslanders to make healthier choices. A healthy and varied diet is one that includes eating plenty of fruit and vegetables and avoiding foods that are low in nutrients and high in salt, saturated fat and sugar.

  • Step 1: Starting off

Before starting it is important to have a clear understanding of what is required and communicate this to all key people.

  • Step 2: Taking stock

Before you make any changes, you need to assess the food and drinks that are currently available in your canteen and identify areas for improvement.

  • Step 3: Planning for change

Once you have a detailed idea of what food and drinks are currently available and can identify which products need to be replaced, you can prepare to revise the choices on offer.

  • Step 4: Making the change

After you have worked out how to revise the choices on offer, you need to consider how to market your new menu to members and visitors so that it will sell well.

  • Step 5: Assessing your progress

Once the changes have been implemented it is important to undertake regular reviews to assess your progress. Consider the ideas and changes which were originally selected.

  • Step 6: Beyond the canteen

Finally, if you wish to help your club or association to champion healthy eating and drinking as part of the wider activities, it may be time to consider some of the projects listed below.
