If you would like more older adults to participate in activities offered by your organisation, why not try:

  • providing social opportunities as well as physical participation and competition activities (if your activity is a sport)
  • asking older people what would attract them to your activity
  • keeping your fees and costs affordable and keep equipment requirements to a minimum
  • holding activities for older adults on suitable days and at convenient times
  • modifying or coming up with new sports that are suitable for older people (eg Golden Oldies Rugby)
  • promoting realistic role models rather than elite athletes who are ageing
  • training coaches and leaders who empathise with older people - or train older people to take on the job
  • encouraging transport solutions like car pooling, buddy systems and organising events at venues that are accessible by public transport
  • promoting sports with a traditionally older membership (like golf or bowls) but also try some activities that challenge expectations of age-appropriate activity
  • promoting activity programs where evidence shows they address health and wellness issues (eg Tai Chi for arthritis, Steady Steps for falls prevention, Living Longer Living Stronger for resistance training)
  • highlighting the social and psychological benefits of sport and physical activity - like making new friends, and improving self-esteem and feelings of control.
