Did you know that double-leg amputees run the 100m in less than two seconds outside Olympic record time?
Or that the best long-distance runners in the world take two hours to finish a marathon, but the best wheelchair athletes can finish in less than 90 minutes!
There are very few disabilities or medical conditions that prevent people participating in physical activity or sport at the level of their choice.
Queensland has a number of sport and recreation bodies providing services for people with a disability
- Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association (for people with a physical disability or vision impairment)
- Lifestream Foundation (for people with an intellectual disability)
- Special Olympics Queensland
- Deaf Sports and Recreation Queensland
These organisations can help to link people with a disability to clubs, organisations and community facilities that are inclusive of people with all abilities.
The Australian Sports Commission offers workshops and resources on sport and physical activity for people with disabilities through the Disability Education Program.
Visit the Australian Sports Commission website for more information on disability sport and links to national and international disability sport bodies.
