An integrated approach

If Queensland kids are to get active and stay active, comprehensive plans need to be developed and regularly evaluated and improved by all key stakeholders. Above all else, well-resourced programs need to be developed that are enjoyable - sport for young people must be fun!

The best way to achieve a coordinated approach is to work together towards providing fun, safe and enjoyable sport and recreation for Queensland kids. Key stakeholders include:

  • Queensland Government
  • the education sectors
  • state sporting and recreational organisations
  • local governments
  • schools
  • clubs
  • the community.

The Get Active Queensland Children and Young People strategy, released in October 2003, provides a range of projects targeted at people who deliver physical activity programs for children.

The Department works with other Queensland agencies to achieve the following goals:

  • Participation - To provide all young people with quality experiences so they can participate to their full potential.
  • Coaches, teachers and other sport educators - To provide education and support for coaches, officials and administrators and through the education system, teachers and school administrators, involved in junior sport.
  • Links between schools and community - To provide a consistent, coordinated approach to sport in the community by schools, clubs and other providers.
  • Competition - To provide properly managed and well structured competition, relevant to the age range and skill level of the participants.
  • Volunteers - To provide supportive environments for the development of sound volunteer management practices that encourage young people to extend their involvement in sport.
  • Planning and allocation of resources - To provide a consistent, coordinated approach to junior sport, improving the planning of programs, facilities and resource allocation.
  • Safety in junior sport - To provide safe, supportive environments for the development of skills and good sporting behaviours in a wide variety of physical activities.
