The Get Active Queensland Active School Leaders (ASL) Program is a student-centred leadership program for primary and secondary school students. It is designed to encourage and develop leadership skills in older students, while providing younger students with the opportunity to learn and develop physical activity skills.
ASL provides a positive environment for students to learn new skills and be active, and it supports the new Health and Physical Education syllabus for Queensland schools.
The Department has developed a Coordinator's Manual and 13 pro-formas to help you implement the program. These can be downloaded by clicking on the links at the bottom of this page.
How to use the ASL Coordinator's Manual
The ASL Coordinator's Manual is a guide to help teachers implement the ASL program. It includes suggestions for recruiting ASL team members, gaining community support and running the program. The suggestions are flexible so you can build your own program to suit your school's environment and needs.
The manual should be used in conjunction with an ASL Leader's Handbook. An example handbook is provided below.
A number of other pro-formas are also available to help you implement the program (see below).
How to use the ASL pro-formas
The ASL pro-formas are provided in Microsoft Word format for you to download to your computer. They are designed for you to individualise the information to suit your school and your school's ASL program. You can do this by:
- inserting information where appropriate - there are specific areas where you can insert information directly (eg name of your school and specific contacts); and
- expanding on information - the pro-formas provide general information, however, you may wish to expand on the information in some areas, for example, in the letters to parents or in the Leader's Handbook.
Once your school is implementing the Active School Leaders (ASL) program, you can:
- download ASL certificates for your leaders and participants (included in the resources listed below); and
- provide feedback to SRQ on the program.
In addition, it is recommended that the resources Young People Can Take a Lead and the Modified Sport Resource Manual: Lesson Plans for Sport Leaders, produced by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), be purchased from the ASC and placed in your library. See section 5 of the Coordinator's Manual for a list of other resources and descriptions.
