In order to provide good access to sport and recreation opportunities, the Queensland Government has committed to protect 50 per cent more land for nature conservation and public recreation by 2020.

To support this ambition, Providing Opportunities for Off-road Motorcycling – A Guide for Local Governments (PDF, 1.3 MB) Providing Opportunities for Off-road Motorcycling – A Guide for Local Governments (RTF, 424 KB) has been written to support local government and off-road motorcycling stakeholders throughout Queensland to achieve the protection and sustainable provision of appropriate spaces for off-road motorcycling.

This guide provides background information for local governments on issues associated with off-road motorcycling and the appropriate provision of opportunities for this activity. It offers advice regarding how planning scheme elements may accommodate off-road motorcycle riding, including components which local governments may consider for inclusion to support off-road motorcycling and actions local governments can take to support safe and legal riding. The guide also provides information for local governments relevant to the identification of areas suitable for off-road motorcycle riding, protection of identified areas from incompatible land uses and preparation of assessment criteria for off-road motorcycle riding facilities, including noise.
Also included in the guide is an exemplar ‘Motorsport Activity Code', developed by the Council of Mayors (SEQ) Trail Bike Taskforce in collaboration with the Queensland Government, to provide consistent, clear direction on criteria an off-road motorcycle riding facility may be assessed against.
