Following is a summary of the individuals and projects that received an award in 2006. These initiatives demonstrate the significant contribution made by individuals, community groups, government and non-government organisations in the prevention of domestic and family violence in Queensland.

Natalee Rauch for her Rockhampton High School arts project

Partnership

Winner:
Mackay District Police and the Domestic Violence Resource Service (Mackay and Region) Inc for their domestic violence training package
Highly commended:
Warwick Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Strategy for their Greater Understanding and Response to Domestic Violence (G.U.A.R.D.) initiative

Community Organisation

Winner:
Kyabra Community Association at Sunnybank Hills for their Women’s Narrative Project – Illuminations
Highly commended:
Seniors Advocacy and Information Legal Service (SAILS); and SCOPE for their Community Minded Employment Training (COMET) initiative

School-based Prevention Project

Winner:
Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service for their Healthy Relationships Project 2006
Highly commended:
Moonshadow Healing Arts for their Youth Expression Sessions

Government

Winner:
Coorparoo Secondary College for their Domestic and Family Violence Prevention awareness-raising initiative

Indigenous

Winner:
Lena Passi Women’s Shelter
Highly commended:
Coen Safe Haven Initiative for their Local Community Project Group

 

Introduced in 1997, the annual awards are an initiative of the Department of Communities. The 2006 award winners were announced on 4 May 2006.
