Ministerial Advisory Council on Domestic and Family Violence
The Ministerial Advisory Council on Domestic and Family Violence provides current and timely advice to the Minister for Communities, Seniors and Youth and the Queensland Government on issues that relate to the development of policies, programs and services that impact on domestic and family violence issues.
The council:
- provides timely and expert advice to the Minister for Communities, Seniors and Youth and other relevant Ministers where appropriate, on matters relating to the prevention and early intervention of domestic and family violence
- provides advice on legislation, policy and programs relating to domestic and family violence, as requested by the Minister
- provides advice to the Minister on current and emerging issues and concerns of importance in relation to domestic and family violence, as identified by the council
- monitors and advises on the implementation and impact of the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 1989 related community awareness and service delivery initiatives and research priorities.
Priorities
The council's 2008-2010 priorities will be informed by the new council. The council's 2005-2007 priority areas were:
- Perpetrator programs
- Domestic and family violence legislation
- Indigenous family violence
- Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.
Council members
The Ministerial Advisory Council on Domestic and Family Violence is a representative council made up of:
- an independent Chair
- one representative from each of the ten Department of Communities regions
- one urban Indigenous representative
- one rural and remote Indigenous representative
- one Torres Strait Islander representative
- one representative for Aboriginal communities in Cape York
Queensland Government representatives from relevant agencies, eg:
- Department of Communities' Violence Prevention Team
- Queensland Police Service
- Department of Child Safety
- Queensland Health
- Department of Justice and Attorney-General
- Office for Women.
Members hold the positions of Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson. Each member brings knowledge and expertise regarding domestic and family violence issues in their region and from the people they represent, as well as their own unique perspectives. Collectively the council reflects a range of perspectives across Queensland.
Council meetings
Council meetings are generally held in Brisbane three times a year. Members keep in contact between meetings and are active in their regions throughout their term.
