Schoolies
While the Queensland Government recognises that many young people celebrate the significant achievement of finishing school, it does not condone irresponsible or unsafe behaviour. Contrary to popular belief, the Queensland Government does not fund ‘schoolies celebrations’ at any locations in Queensland.
Through the safer schoolies initiative, the government provides funding for community safety responses across the state, including the Gold Coast. The community safety response is a coordinated effort of government agencies and volunteers to assist the Gold Coast to manage the large number of schoolies in the Surfers Paradise precinct.
To improve safety and reduce the impact on local communities that host Schoolies community safety responses, the government promotes:
- better coordination through partnerships
- increased safety
- increased awareness of rights and responsibilities.
In 2007, Department of Communities provided $180,000 in grants to local community organisations for projects that helped support the coordination of community safety responses across Queensland.
