Organisational Information

Spinal Life Australia is the leading organisation in Queensland representing people with a spinal cord injury and other physical disabilities. The organisation has led the way in providing contemporary service delivery for more than 50 years and currently represents around 2000 members and clients around the state.

At Spinal Life Australia, we offer support and services, including personal assistance in the home, employment assistance, advocacy on a wide range of issues, and healthcare and lifestyle advice. Our clients include people with a physical disability, including spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Friedreich’s Ataxia, muscular dystrophy, post-polio syndrome, transverse myelitis, and cerebral palsy.

Our services range from supporting a newly-injured person to providing assistance and advice throughout that person’s life as required.

We are dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with a physical disability, and we are passionate in our commitment to rebuilding lives, promoting and celebrating independence, and preventing injuries.
We offer a multitude of services to our clients, including case management support, funding management and advice, sourcing of home aids, facilitating extra supports, ancillary health supports such as Registered Nurses, Occupational Therapists and clinical advice and support, together with training for staff in personal care.

Our clients are given assurance of being able to access a wide range of services, all from within the one organisation.

Host Provider Model

As a host provider, SLA provides a service that ranges across three areas of Self Direction which include: Full Self Direction, Shared Management and Host Provider Managed/Participant Directed.

1. Full Self Direction

A participant accepts full responsibility for planning budgeting and organising their support as well as purchasing their goods. This means a participant can either employ their own staff or obtain personal support workers through a service provider. Funding will be directed by Spinal Life Australia and disbursed to the participant as a direct payment on a monthly basis.
The participant will then acquit this funding each month.

2. Shared Management

A participant can work with a host provider in accepting most of the responsibility for planning and organising their supports. DS funding is partially advanced to the participant's YLYC Bank Account, whilst the other is held by SLA to pay for goods and services or to reimburse the participant. This is dependent on the level of responsibility the participant feels comfortable with.

3. Host Provider Managed/Participant Directed

This is the host provider managed/participant directed model of service delivery and the client is engaged in planning regarding the when/how/who of service delivery. SLA receives invoices and arranges payment for the goods and services.

SLA provides monthly financial statements to all YLYC participants.

SLA as a Host Provider

Initially our Self Directed Supports Coordinator will meet with a potential participant either face-to-face or via phone/Skype for a consultation.

During this meeting our Self Directed Supports Coordinator will assist you in developing your goals by getting you to reflect on:

  • What would make a good life for you.
  • Goals to achieve that good life.
  • Steps to achieve those goals.
  • Disability supports needed to take these steps.

This is all about you having a good life.

Fee Structure

Spinal Life Australia does not charge a host provider establishment fee. SLA charges an annual administration management fee - the cost for operating a YLYC arrangement. The fee is 8.5% of your annual funding package.

This covers:

  • working with you to develop a plan and budget
  • implementing the plan and budget
  • monitoring the plan and budget
  • reviewing the plan and budget
  • reporting to Disability Services

Fees and charges will be reviewed on an annual basis and will take effect form the commencement of each new financial year.
