Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors

Our role

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is responsible for implementing and managing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) across Australia. The Queensland Government is committed to the successful delivery of the scheme in Queensland and works closely with the NDIA and the Commonwealth Government on Queensland's transition to the NDIS. This is a transformational change that is being carefully coordinated and well supported.

The Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors is the lead Queensland Government agency coordinating the transition to the NDIS on behalf of Queensland. Queensland Government agencies that deliver disability services are assisting their clients to understand the NDIS, the opportunities it can bring and to transition smoothly into the scheme.

Once fully implemented, the NDIS will be injecting approximately $4 billion of Commonwealth and State funds into the Queensland economy each year, with Queensland making a contribution of an estimated $2.03 billion.

The Queensland Government has also invested in a range of NDIS readiness initiatives to assist people with disability, their families and carers, service providers and businesses to understand the opportunities presented by the NDIS and how they can access the scheme.

Bilateral Agreement

In March 2016, the Queensland and Commonwealth Governments signed an agreement for full rollout of the NDIS, across Queensland. The Bilateral Agreement details the different aspects of Queensland's transition to the NDIS, including how Queensland's phased transition will occur.
