Respite services

The Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services delivers respite services directly as well as funding non-government organisations to provide respite services.

Respite services are delivered by the Department through Accommodation Support and Respite Services (AS&RS).

AS&RS directly provides short-term centre-based respite stays for people with an intellectual disability who are cared for by families and other voluntary carers, including foster carers. These short breaks are designed to support primary carers whilst giving the person with a disability a positive and enjoyable experience.

AS&RS respite centres are designed to support four to five people at one time, on a 24 hour basis. The respite centres operate for most of the year, apart from short periods for building maintenance or staff training. All respite centres are closed on Christmas Day.

Respite centres are located in Townsville, Hervey Bay, the Sunshine Coast, Deception Bay, Brisbane, Loganholme, the Gold Coast, Ipswich and Toowoomba. Each of these respite centres are managed and coordinated via the local service centre.

For further information about AS&RS respite services please contact your nearest regional office or phone the Disability Information Service on 13 QGOV (13 74 68)* (TTY: 133 677).

*Cost of a local call. Calls from mobile phones are charged at applicable rates.
