The NDIS is a new way of providing people with disability across Australia with support to meet their disability needs and link with their community.

The scheme supports people with a permanent and significant disability to take part in everyday activities. This includes people whose disability is an intellectual, sensory or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.

Early launch

Eligible children and young people aged under 18 years in Townsville and Charters Towers local government areas, and all eligible people with disability aged under 65 years on Palm Island were the first Queenslanders to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) as part of Queensland's early launch from January 2016. Read more about the early launch.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is fully operational in North Queensland including the areas of Townsville, Hinchinbrook, Burdekin, west to Mt Isa and up to the gulf. Queensland Government Disability Services is no longer funding specialist disability support services in the area and people seeking support should contact the National Disability Insurance Agency.
